Safe & Sound Protocol
What is "Safe & Sound"?
- A gentle healing protocol created by Dr. Stephen Porges
- Based on the Polyvagal Theory, also developed by Dr. Porges
- Scientifically designed to help repattern and regulate your nervous system
- Uses proprietary filtered music (non-invasive auditory intervention) to increase vagal regulation and nervous system function
- Helps your body shift from stress & activation to safety & connection to foster healing
- Highly personalized, client-centered, and integrates music choice as well as psychoeducation
A Trauma-Responsive Protocol
- Promotes neuroplasticity and enhances brain recovery in trauma survivors
- Works for trauma, anxiety, ADHD, fatigue, chronic conditions, and social engagement
- Fosters nervous system flexibility and resilience in varied neurodivergent populations
- Enhances trauma recovery healing in sessions when integrated with other somatic modalities
- Supports trauma survivors by providing a strong foundation for deeper healing to take place
- Safely conducted under the guidance and monitoring of an SSP-trained & certified professional
In a nutshell: SSP helps reset your nervous system to recognize safety cues through acoustic vagal nerve stimulation, reducing chronic stress and improving emotional balance. Your role is to…
Listen & Heal
Could this work for me?
The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is designed to help those who struggle with nervous system dysregulation, which can manifest as anxiety, emotional overwhelm, trauma responses, or difficulty feeling safe as well as internally and/or socially connected. Whether you are managing chronic stress, trauma, attention, internal or relational challenges, SSP works by training and repatterning the nervous system for safety, balance, and resilience.
The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) has been scientifically designed to help alleviate the following 8 condition categories:
Anxiety & Chronic Stress
Helps regulate emotional responses, shift out of fight-or-flight mode, and create a deeper sense of calm.
Trauma & PTSD
Supports nervous system recovery, promotes resilience, and improves emotional stability.
ADHD & Executive Function
Balancing the nervous system improves focus, reduces impulsivity, and enhances cognitive flexibility.
Sensory Sensitivities
Helps filter sensory input more effectively, reducing overstimulation from sound, light, and touch.
Emotional Dysregulation
Aids in balancing mood swings, reducing emotional reactivity, and fostering better self-regulation.
Social Anxiety & Relational Issues
Strengthens the ability to engage socially and feel more comfortable in relationships.
Fatigue
Encourages deep relaxation, helping the nervous system transition into a restorative state for improved sleep and energy levels.
Chronic Pain & Inflammation
Helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, supporting pain reduction and immune function.
If you feel like your body is always "on alert," stuck in a cycle of stress, anger, grief, overwhelm, or rumination, SSP may help you, as it is scientifically designed to help shift from survival states into a state of safety, connection, and resilience by working at the root level of nervous system dysfunction.
What is the process like?
The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is administered in session or as a self-paced provider-guided program, is highly customized to each client's needs, and includes the following phases:
Preparing & Assessing
- HOLISTIC INTAKE – Client history and needs assessment review, autonomic mapping, SSP psychoeducation and client's informed consent
- SSP ASSESSMENT - Prior to Week 1 (baseline/pre-assessment) followed by post-assessment 4 weeks after round completion. Then begin maintenance or start another round as needed
- PROGRAM PLANNING – Initial collaborative program roadmap with dynamic and integrative plan adjustments throughout protocol duration
Listening & Healing
- PATHWAY DELIVERY – SSP is delivered weekly at the beginning of each session to enhance somatic modalities normally used
- PROGRAM REVIEW & NEXT STEPS – Make program adjustments during round as needed, assess results 4 weeks after round completion, then start new round or begin maintenance
- MAINTENANCE PHASE - Once the protocol (all needed rounds) is complete, begin transitioning into the maintenance phase, called the "Balance" phase, with provider facilitating client's free, monitored app access on their own
If you feel like your body is always "on alert," stuck in a cycle of stress, anger, grief, overwhelm, or rumination, SSP may help you, as it is scientifically designed to help shift from survival states into a state of safety, connection, and resilience by working at the root level of nervous system dysfunction. SSP can be transformative because it accelerates the resolution of trauma responses to support faster recovery by fostering the readiness to change. SSP is not a "quick fix," yet research shows that when integrated into your weekly trauma recovery sessions or self-paced, expert-guided SSP plan, it fosters nervous system regulation.
